Spring 2018 Semester

Our mission is to encourage young people to become technology creators, not just consumers. The spring classes will continue to focus on inquiry-based learning where kids solve exciting challenges using critical thinking skills. All of our students will design, build and create using math and science. We will cover the following topics.

We continue to give our students unique experiences. In the Fall, our students have been using their Raspberry Pi’s to learn about computing. They have been programming in Python and now using the Sense Hat (add-on board for Raspberry Pi) to learn specifically about embedded computing in space. In the lab they built their very own LED desk Lamps. Next, we learned about Artificial Intelligence and the Watson robots from IBM. We finished up the semester programming quadcopters. We are very excited to introduce new opportunities this Spring for our students. These include:


  • Using CNC Machine (Shopbot) to make a piece of furniture
  • Using a Othermill (desktop milling machine) to make their very own dog tags
  • Build and fly their very own model sailplanes


This Spring our students will be using new rapid prototyping equipment including 3D printers, laser cutters and vinyl cutters to begin learning how to make almost anything. We hold ALL our labs at the Charlotte Latin Fab Lab. A fab lab is a small-scale workshop offering (personal) digital fabrication. A fab lab is generally equipped with an array of flexible computer-controlled tools that cover several different length scales and various materials, with the aim to make "almost anything. Charlotte Latin Fab Lab is one of the few fab labs in the southeast. Here is a list of just some of the equipment found in the lab:


  • Over 10 3D printers
  • Two Shopbot CNC Machines
  • Three Laser Cutters
  • Five Vinyl Cutters


We have small class sizes (ten students or less) taught by experienced teachers so all students will have the opportunity to safely use all of this leading edge technology.


Cyber security is an exciting field that can lead to an incredible career that is rewarding both financially and professionally.  Our students will learn about ethical hacking and practice their cyber skills on networks we build at the Fablab as we inspire the next generation of cyber security professional.


Our Hybrid program is a combination of live webinars with an instructor twice a week ( Mondays & Wednesdays for 1 hour each session ) and labs every other week on Thursdays. For students residing outside of Charlotte and that are unable to attend labs during the week, we offer Saturday labs. We also continue to offer our MAKE IT Workshops for experienced high school students which meet over four Saturdays in the Semester to make their own personal projects.

As always, the labs and Webinars (we like to think of them as “Labinars” since the kids are doing labs at home) will continue to feature hands-on projects that focus on relevant, inquiry-based learning. We are keeping the costs the same ($492).


NEW Make It Workshop For Advanced High School Students!
For students who have taken the high school course, we have a new program called Make It!. Students will be able to work on a project of their own choice after learning how to safely and effectively use the new prototyping equipment. Students will meet every other week for a three hour lab at Charlotte Latin. The increased lab time and the focus on equipment will mean there will be no Webinars.

Listed below are some of the tools that we will use in lab to transform software ideas into real world products by cutting material away or building up materials to make almost anything. This technology promises to do for manufacturing what desktop publishing did for writing. Your child will learn how to safely use this equipment and the math and science that makes it all possible.


3D Printing
Taken right out of the future, 3D Printing is the process of making three-dimensional solid objects from a digital object. It almost seems like a magical process. Your child will learn about 3D Printing and drawing. Using a 3D printer, they will manufacture their very own product they designed. This experience will help them in the near future, as 3D printers become part of the everyday world. While some programs may have a few 3D printers, we will have 10 printers at our disposal.


Laser Cutter
Replace the router on a CNC machine with a laser and you get a laser cutter. While 3D printers are the “celebrities” of the world of digital fabrication, laser cutters are the workhorses. Your child will learn to safely use the laser cutter to engrave and cut materials to create products not possible any other way.


Othermill - Milling Machines
The Othermill is a portable, precise milling machine that allows you to create 2D and 3D objects out of durable materials, such as wood, metal, and plastic using digital designs.


Shopbot - CNC Router
A ShopBot is an amazing do-all tool for precisely cutting, carving, drilling or machining all kinds of things from all kinds of materials. With a ShopBot, you use software to design your parts on your personal computer. Then, like a robot, the computer controls the cutter to precisely cut your parts. In the past, tools like ShopBots were strictly industrial tools and were referred to in factories as CNC (for Computer Numeric Control) tools.
