We will focus on using a CNC Milling Machine including a Shopbot and go into greater depth with the industry equipment we have in the FAB Lab. We said this before, but it is worth repeating. We are the only K-12 FabLab in the southeast which is the platinum standard in makerspaces. We offer equipment and expertise no one in the area can match. Students will learn how to make almost anything in this camp which is based on the FabLab Model. Students will be using equipment including CNC Machines, 3D printing, Electronics, Raspberry Pi Computing, Laser Cutting and Vinyl Cutters to make a project of their own choice .
CNC Machine - Shopbot
A ShopBot is an amazing do-all tool for precisely cutting, carving, drilling or machining all kinds of things from all kinds of materials. With a ShopBot, you use the included software to design your parts on your personal computer, then, like a robot, the computer controls the cutter to precisely cut your parts. In the past, tools like ShopBots were strictly industrial tools and were referred to in factories as CNC (for Computer Numeric Control) tools. - Shopbot website
Taken right out of the future, 3D Printing is the process of making three-dimensional solid objects from a digital object. It almost seems like a magical process. Your child will use a 3D Printer to have their own 3D designs made with computer software come to life. We have over fifteen 3D Printers which means your child will get more opportunities to print.
Campers will be given a Raspberry Pi computer. This tiny, inexpensive computer was developed to teach kids programming and physical computing including robotics. We all learn best by doing, and this computer lets kids experiment and tinker without putting your expensive family computer at risk.
Using the power of light to cut and engrave everything from cardboard to glass is an exciting process that gives kids new ways to be creative. We have multiple laser cutters so everyone will get a chance to use the power of light.
Combining computing power and their imagination, campers can use a vinyl cutter to make everything from custom vinyl stickers, to electric circuits to T-Shirts. Vinyl cutters are useful tools that campers will enjoy working with.
